I’ll add after photos, but wanted to share that we finally moved in at the very beginning of August! We started really hating life for the last week or two, but were so appreciative of the support of friends and family who helped make us feel at home when we couldn’t be at home.
I’m going to change this blog to more of a how-to on renovating your home as your own General Contractor. We did this, and get so many questions. We used an architect instead of a GC and oversaw all the work ourselves. We had good relationships with great craftsman through work on our previous home, I’ll share their names and photos of what they did too.
We now have some electrical and finally, walls! We discovered that some of the walls smelled of cat urine so we cut them out, applied BIN shellac and replaced the insulation. So far this seems to have worked well, but I suppose time will tell. Everytime I’m in the house I’m convinced I smell ammonia but I’m hoping I’m just having ugly flashbacks! We found unbelievable dry wall guys. They are awesome.

I liked the color in the Freemont. It is very bright and I think it could add some fun to the space. It comes in white, orange, grey and my favorite: blue.
I went to Ikea, spent six hours picking out cabinets and one hour eating various Swedish treats and drinking rose hip juice. The cafe was delightful as always but the cabinet selection was hell on (high gloss laminate) wheels. What do you think? This is the RINGHULT style. We we opted for a mix of grey and white as shown in the diagram below.
Well we sold our own house in less than 24 hours, for over asking price and with a back-up offer to boot, so we are happy campers! As for The Manor we now have a plan, a bonafide architectural plan, no less.
No sexy photos to share this time, Joe and his buddy King are moving along removing the old cherry peg wood floors (RIP), old kitchen cabinets, toilets, and vanities. (I watch the kiddos and eat bon bons while all of this is going on, naturally.)
We have received plans from the structural engineer to remove large wall portions and have found an architect. We love her, but she won’t be starting on our plans until the end of April. In the meantime, we have enormous quantities of wallpaper to remove and neglected shrubs to pull out. Oh and one other tiny task: selling our current house. We hoped our new house would be move in ready before we had to do that, but it doesn’t appear to be in the cards. Oh well, the kids and I will enjoy a nice long visit with grandma.
